Australia mobile carriers are currently in a all out price war. Virgin and VHA announced new plans for July 1st and Telstra also did a refresh not too long ago, now Optus have joined in. Only 3 or so months since the announcement of the ‘Social Caps’ they are now going by the wayside in favour of the new ‘Max Cap’ plans being released 4th of July. This would be great timing considering Ausdroid has posted about the Galaxy S dropping to $0 on a $49 Cap with Optus. However you really don’t get much in the way of extras over the existing ‘Social Caps’ The $19 has a value increase and the $79 has a data decrease, so for the life of me i can only think it’s a re-badge of sorts. Breakdown of the plans after the break.
The new caps will be at the $19, $29, $49, $59 and $79 prices point and will completely take over from the current consumer caps Optus have in the market now. Below is a list of the included value with each plan, expect to see these live on Optus’ website starting tomorrow.
$19 = $70 + 100MB or Unlimited Blackberry Email
$29 = $150 + 200MB or Unlimited Blackberry Email
$49 = $420 + 500MB or Unlimited Blackberry Email & Browsing
$59* = $450 + 1GB or Unlimited Blackberry Email & Browsing
$79* = $800 + 1.2GB or Unlimited Blackberry Email & Browsing
* Unlimited SMS/MMS included with plan

Ahhh yes.
Makes sense with Galaxy S being dropped down $10. Seems like all they’ve done is changed the name?
Yup, I’ve update the post to reflect that
Looks like the Max Cap is launching today on the Optus website. $49 has unlimited SMS. Facebook and Twitter are still unlimited, but YouTube and MySpace seem to have been cut.
Correction, the Max Caps are actually replacing the ‘yes’ Caps. (the purchase pages just went back up)
“New optus Max Cap Plan have everything you want in a plan – and more! Get huge value for talk, text and mobile internet plus enjoy non-stop social networking with unlimited access to Facebook®, Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace and eBay.”
Correct, it’s a replacement of the Social and yes Caps
Wait, so it’s replacing BOTH caps? Does that means that the Social cap will be unavailable for purchase in the near future?
Correct, it’s a replacement for both the Social and the ‘yes’ Caps. These plans will be decommission from the 1st of October so you have a few months to connect to the old plans if you want.
Social plans are so much better that these Max caps, if you are going to sign up to one, choose the Social. Ditching unlimited Youtube and replacing it with unlimited Ebay, Linkedin and Foursquare is a bad move. Unlimited Youtube is a great selling point, whereas unlimited ebay? That uses hardly any data! And what the hell are the other two?? AND the new caps charge more for excess data usage! Social caps $0.10c per mb, Max $0.30c from memory (I could be wrong on the Max price, but it is definitely more).
Sorry for the rant, I work at an Optus Dealer and I won’t be pushing the Max caps on customers when the Social plans offer much better value. (Exception to $19 cap for call increase). I’ll be sad when Oct 1 comes along, but Optus should have better plans by then anyway. Hopefully
I have to agree with you 100%. I have no understanding why they would create new plans that aren’t as good to replace plans that are only 3-4 months old anyway. Seems ridiculous to me. Thanks for your comment Rina
What the hell, I swear when I posted my earlier comment the front page of the Optus website was touting Unlimited SMS on the $49 Max Cap (for the Galaxy S)…
You must have seen it wrong, the $49 has never had Unlimited text only $59 and up.
My cousin recommended this blog and she was totally right keep up the fantastic work!
nice post. thanks.
